Changing your Name?

change-of-nameNot every bride takes a married name, after all there is no legal obligation to do so. A lot of women do and if you’re one of them , you need to know the right way to make the change. First step is to decide what surname to take. Traditionally, most women take his last name but we can also merge our maiden name with our husband’s last name to produce a hyphenated one. Well if you are like me you can push for him to take your last name instead, hey… it’s perfectly legal.

Well if you are doing the change you should contact the following agencies to make it correct and save you the financial trouble, problems with the Internal Revenue Service and furder more, damage your credit rating.

Driver’s License – Contact your local DMV or agency and informed them of the changes and make sure they update their records.

Social Security – If you have a social security number in the U.S., you can visit the website at http://www.ssa.gov and obtain all the information or call them at (800) 772-1213.

Passport – You can find all the information needed on their site at http://www.travel.state.gov/passport for more information if you are in the U.S.

Also don’t forget to fill out your Tax Return with your new name, call all the banks, credit cards, insurance agencies, investments companies and any place where your legal name is listed.
